How to find your belt size without a measuring tape

Most belts get returned for one reason: the wrong size. It is avoidable, and you do not need a measuring tape.

The two-inch rule

Take the waist size printed on your trousers and add two inches. A 32-inch trouser waist takes a 34-inch belt. This works because a belt sits over your trousers, not against your skin, and you want the buckle to fasten on the middle hole.

If you want to measure properly

Thread your current belt through your trouser loops and note the hole you normally use. Measure from the fold at the buckle to that hole. That measurement is your belt size.

Free size and ratchet belts

These are different. A ratchet belt has no holes at all: you thread it, mark your length, cut the tail with scissors, and clamp the buckle back on. It takes two minutes and fits exactly, which is why they suit anyone between two standard sizes.

Between two sizes?

Go up. Leather softens and stretches slightly with wear, and a belt that is fractionally long simply sits with more tail. One that is short is unusable.
