Buying online in India: how to tell a real store from a scam

Plenty of Indian shoppers have been burned by a store that took payment and vanished. Four checks take about a minute.

1. Read the policies

A real store publishes return, refund, shipping and contact pages, with specific timelines. Vague promises with no numbers mean nothing.

2. Look for a way to reach a human

An email address, a WhatsApp number, or both. If the only contact is a form, be cautious.

3. Check the photos

Search the product image online. If the same photo appears on twenty marketplaces, the store has never held the product. Stores that photograph their own stock usually show the item being used, from several angles.

4. Be suspicious of impossible discounts

A ₹6,999 item permanently reduced to ₹999 is not a discount, it is a made-up original price. Honest stores show a compare-at price they actually charged.
